Life on a four-acre semi-rural property in Ocean Grove was busy for this family. Their abundance of outdoor space and million-dollar view over Lake Connewarre had the potential to create a sanctuary, but it needed zoning and a masterplan to organise the landscape.
To meet their immediate needs and achieve the biggest lifestyle gain, the pool was built. The 20m x 3m lap pool was positioned to maximise the rural north-west view out over Lake Connewarre. The decking on the east side of the pool meant sun lounges could be orientated to take in the sweeping view. A 3m x 2m spa matched the scale of the pool and acreage, creating a space for socialising, relaxing or playing while the pool was being used for laps. while the pool was used for laps.
As avid swimmers, the family initially considered a heat pump for year-round use but opted for solar heating at 150% capacity to test feasibility and manage costs. It has proved sufficient, with provisions in place for a future heat pump. The spa runs on a heat pump with home automation, chosen over a costly gas upgrade.
The heavily vegetated site included protected Bellarine Yellowgums. The pool was carefully placed to avoid tree removal and falling leaves, and a second Naked sanitation system was installed to maintain water quality. Extensive landscaping preparation was required to protect trees and navigate the sloping block.
Pool and spa area built to complement natural beauty
The design used earthy stone walls, Spotted Gum decking, and 48mm Sukabami tiles in soft green tones that complement the surrounding environment and reflect the towering gums.
An infinity edge manages the slope and removes the need for fencing, protecting the view. A dramatic natural split-stone wall provides dust protection, privacy, and a striking feature. At night, lights in the infinity trough illuminate the wall, pool and gums marking the first step in a 10-year landscape masterplan.
As the sun sets over another day on Ocean Grove, a grandiose lap pool with infinity edge lights up the hill and takes in the sweeping rural views over Lake Connewarre. Nestled underneath the towering 100-year-old Yellowgums, the 20m pool flanked by a free-form stone wall is the hero of this four-acre property in Ocean Grove, and the first step in a landscape masterplan to span the next 10 years.
